Family Photo Ideas

Sharing is caring!

Until this past weekend, I had no idea that Easter is officially the “Family Photo Holiday.” Who knew, right?!? Seriously, I have never seen as many family photos posted on Facebook as I did this past Sunday. Ever. Even Christmas can’t compete! And the craziest thing about it – is that I was right there with them and I didn’t even get the you-need-a-family-photo-on-Easter-memo.

Family Photo Ideas

Here’s the thing: my mother-in-law has wanted a family photo for about 5 years now. Yep, she has wanted a photo with her three kids, their spouses and the grandchildren all this time. For one reason or another, we just couldn’t get it done, and I think my mother-in-law seriously thought it wasn’t going to happen. Sure, we tried to snap the impromptu family photo here and there at baptisms and other events, but since it wasn’t set-up, the lighting was always bad or someone wasn’t looking in the right direction etc. Plus, this photo that she wanted was to be made into a canvas for her family room, so an event like a baptism, where the baby boy is in a dress, just didn’t seem right.

Well, miracles do happen, my friends, because this weekend we pulled it off. Sure, there was resistance among the troops but I wasn’t backing down. I was going to get this photo for her come hell or high water. I didn’t care if babies were crying, clothes weren’t coordinating or the weather wasn’t super ideal. I was going to get that photo!

We picked an outdoor place in my husband’s hometown, set up the camera on a tripod, and we got it done. In less than 16 minutes! Plus, it turned out great! Woot! Woot!

I’m not going to post the family photo here because I haven’t asked everyone’s permission yet so you’ll just have to believe me when I say it is canvas-worthy.

What I can show you are my family photos that I snapped right after the extended family photo shoot! Yep, you can imagine just how excited my kids (and husband!) were to extend our photo shoot even more, but we were all dressed up and I wasn’t leaving without a new family photo of just us.

Again, I set the camera on a tripod and we got it done. I decided to use a tripod instead of just handing the camera to a family member, because the fact of the matter is that I just get the exact photo I want that is IN focus when I set the timer and run in the photo. Call me OCD when it comes to photography. I can take it. 😉

Family Photo

Since I plan to cover my new home office with canvases of my kids, I had to get a shot of just the three of them to add to it.

After that, I think it was clear that I was pushing my luck with the photography because the kids started to get silly.

Family Photos

I have to admit that I think they turned out pretty good.

Did you take Easter photos this year? Do you have family members or kids who are less than thrilled when you want to get that family shot?
