How to Create a Firehouse Room

Sharing is caring!

We are so excited about Episode Two of “At Home with Baby Gizmo” because this is one of my favorite rooms in the house. My son’s room is dedicated to his love of everything firefighter. This is one of those themed rooms from top to bottom with everything having something to do with a firehouse. Not only do I love how it turned out but I’m very proud that we put our DIY skills to work to build him a custom-made bed that he picked out.

FIREHOUSE BED:

We had been eyeing the Pottery Barn Kids FireHouse Loft Bed since it came out a few years ago but we just weren’t willing to pay the almost $2,000 that it cost. Since PBK no longer makes this bed, it wasn’t an option for this new house anyway. So, we turned to Ana White’s fabulous site to get the plans to make our own. Yep, AnaWhite.com has the entire plans including shopping list, cut list and a step-by-step guide on how to make it. It took us about a weekend to build it and another week to paint it to get the specific red shade that we wanted. My only tip in building this bed is to pay the extra money and buy good wood. Don’t go for the cheap stuff! The entire bed (excluding the mattress and bedding – we already had that!) costs us less than $300 to make including the wood, paint and the fire house lettering.)

We built the bed and painted it in the garage but assembled it in his room.

This is a super fun loft bed but my 5-year-old wasn’t quite ready at the beginning to be up on the top so we kept the mattress on the floor under the bed for a few weeks. The bedding we got at the Land of Nod Outlet a few years ago so we thought it would be perfect for this firefighter themed room. *Note: This bedding is now discontinued at Land of Nod.

The side of the bed has a ladder for the little firefighter to get up and down.

Once we put the mattress on top of the loft, we made the bottom of the bed into a reading nook and play area with his Pottery Barn Kids Red Anywhere Chair and a Threshold 23″ Picture Ledge from Target to act as a bookshelf.

No firehouse is complete without a dalmatian, right?! So, we added the Melissa & Doug Plush Dalmatian which my son absolutely loves!

WALLPAPER:

You may have noticed the amazing red brick wall behind the bed. While our new house didn’t have a real exposed brick wall, we made our own with this amazing wallpaper that we bought from Amazon.com. Not to overwhelm the room, we only put the wallpaper on the outside wall while keeping the other three walls our standard home tan.

WALL DECOR:

Besides the brick wallpaper, we have an American Flag canvas that I picked up from Kirklands for $25 and a Land of Nod (yes, another discontinued item!) Fire Truck Canvas on the walls.

WINDOWS:

The firehouse room has two tall windows that needed to be covered so that my 5-year-old isn’t up with the sun at 6am on weekends. We again turned to Blinds.com to help us ultimately decide on Levolor 2.5″ Real Wood Blinds. Being a child’s room where they may be unsupervised, window safety was of utmost priority, so we chose cordless wood blinds that are easy to open with the tilt wand or by just lifting up the bottom rail with your hand. They were so easy to install ourselves and we had them up in minutes. SHOP the Levolor 2.5″ Real Wood Blinds HERE.

*Cordless Upgrades are FREE in October from Blinds.com. This is a HUGE because it usually adds 10-20% to the costs of your blinds and cordless blinds are the safer choice for a kid-friendly home!

For more information on Free Cordless, visit their website at Blinds.com.

To add a pop of color on the otherwise tan wall, we added 96″ red drapes from Anna’s Linens.

The Fire House Toy in the photo is the KidKraft Deluxe Fire Rescue Set from Amazon.com.

So, that’s it! You’ve seen the adorable Firehouse Room! Stay tuned for Episode Three in 2 weeks (on Thursday, October 16 at 9:00am EST on our YouTube channel) to see inside the Club House Room.

*Disclosure: Thanks to Blinds.com for sponsoring our “At Home with Baby Gizmo” video series.
