| Full Review: Baby Jogger has been providing active moms and dads with strollers for more than 24 years. The Baby Jogger Company was born in 1984 when Phil Baechler created the first jogging stroller, making his jogs with his infant son easier and more enjoyable. The City Elite Double is Baby Jogger's full-size, top-of-the-line, all-terrain double stroller. We love that it is sporty but fabulously chic all at the same time. While the City Elite Double is stocked with features that are both baby and parent-friendly, there are two features on the 2011 model that may be deal breakers for some parents. (We'll get to the deal breakers in a bit!) The City Elite Double is a great all-terrain stroller. It is sturdy. It has roomy seats. The gigantic canopies. It has fabulous tires. It can work as a travel system. It is gorgeous (in a sporty way!). First, when we are talking about a full-size, side-by-side stroller, we want to know how wide it is. Is it going to fit through your standard doorways? Unfortunately no! Possible deal breaker #1! When Baby Jogger added the cool hand brake on the side of the stroller, they made the stroller wider than a door frame! Why, Baby Jogger, why?!?! Contrary to some online reports, the City Elite Double is 30 1/2 inches wide which is 1/2 of an inch wider than a standard 30" doorway. This will not be a big deal to all moms, but to some moms - it's huge! Good news though - since the stroller is wide, you are going to get two roomy seats! The seats are roomy enough for a big or tall kid and have a combined weight capacity of 100 lbs! Each seat is 12" wide with a 20" seat back and a tall 27" seatback to canopy measurement. The seats are tall enough for our 1, 4 and 6 year old (yes, 6 year old ride when I jog!) testers to fit with no problem. Each seat is complete with a padded, adjustable, 5-point harness for safety. The harness also is easy to adjust for your growing child without having to thread it through the seat. We love the great buckle that closes the 5 point harness. It's rather easy for mom…impossible for our toddlers! We are happy to report that our 4 year old tester could not get the buckle undone! Love that! Each seat reclines with a one-handed strap system that is easy to do and allows you to place the seat in any position from upright to nearly flat (150 degrees). When reclined, the seats are well ventilated with a large mesh window to allow air to flow through, and a drop down weather cover allows you to close the mesh back when the weather is cool or rainy. This feature is fantastic in warmer weather! Since the stroller can accept an infant car seat (with the adapter sold separately) and has almost flat reclining seats, you can use this stroller from the time you take your bundle of joy home from the hospital. The handle bar is adjustable up and down from 34" to 46" (ground to handlebar) for taller and shorter parents. The tallest of parents will love this handlebar. It's easy to operate with two push buttons on the sides. There are two independent canopies that are huge!! Full-coverage-HUGE! Each canopy is complete with two peek-a-boo windows that feature magnetic closures so that you won't disturb your baby just to get a peek. There is also a fabulous side ventilation panel with a cover on each canopy so that you child can see out and to allow air to circulate into the stroller. There is tons of storage space on the City Elite Double. Baby Jogger gave us two fabric parent consoles that have a total of 4 cup holders, two small compartments, and even more pockets on the front with a flap to close it. On the back of each seat are huge mesh pockets and a small zipper pocket. Under the stroller is a large basket that will accommodate a large diaper bag plus baby essentials. The City Elite Double is a large stroller. There is no way around that! But the maneuverability on the stroller is really fabulous! The front swivel wheels allow us to turn it easily and the air tires and front wheel suspension make for a smooth ride. With small tots aboard, we can maneuver it with one hand but need two hands when we start loading up the seats with larger toddlers and kids. There are four large, 12" forever air rubber tires. These tires have permanent air chambers inside them so there is no need to pump them up and never a worry about getting a flat! Plus, these ultra rugged tires allow parents to go off-roading with the kids aboard. The front wheels swivel for easy agility as well as has the ability to lock for added safety and control while jogging or on rougher terrain. The stroller has a parking brake that is operated by a convenient hand lever on the side of the handlebar. This is the hand brake we mentioned earlier that contributed to possible dealbraker #1 because it makes the stroller too wide for a doorframe. The lock is cool and easy to do though. Baby Jogger offers optional car seat adapters to use the stroller as a travel system with Graco, Peg Perego, Britax, Chicco, Evenflo and Maxi Cosi infant car seats. The stroller only accommodates one car seat at a time. The City Elite Double has a very easy two-handed fold. Grab the straps in the seats - pull up - and the stroller folds down quickly. There is a Velcro strap hidden under one of the seats to secure the stroller closed for transporting and storage. The storage strap is a bit time consuming so we'd love to see an automatic lock added. As all side-by-side, all-terrain double strollers can be awkward and heavy while lifting into a vehicle - the City Elite Double is no exception. Here is where possible deal breaker #2 comes in. The stroller weighs in at HEAVY 41 lbs! Yikes! While we expect all-terrain doubles to be heavy because of their extra sturdy frames, the City Elite is a bit heavier than most. It will take a lot of muscle and back strength to get this beast of a stroller in and out of your trunk if you plan to take it on-the-go with you. (Note: Just like most double strollers, the City Elite Double probably will not fit in a very small vehicle trunk.) The Baby Jogger City Elite Double is by no means a cheap purchase. It retails for $649. But if you are looking for a very sturdy, gorgeous stroller (it's a workhorse), with tall, roomy seats, fantastic canopies, an adjustable handlebar, tires you don't have to worry about a flat and you don't mind that it's heavy and wider than a standard doorframe, we definitely think it's worth it. | ||
