Did you think Amazon Prime was just for faster shipping? I did, and then I started looking into Netflix and I saw Prime also offered movies. Wait- Amazon Prime offers movies?! How did I not know that?!
At just $79 a year (works out to be $6.50 a month), these are the three main selling features of Amazon Prime:
- FREE Two-Day Shipping on millions of items
- Unlimited instant streaming of thousands of movies and TV shows with Prime Instant Video
- Read free books each month through Kindle First and the Kindle Owners’ Lending Library
Given that we order a lot from Amazon, from toothpaste to toys, and that we cancelled cable years ago, we decided to try it out. The free two-day shipping is fantastic, we usually receive our orders the next day! Not all items have Prime shipping, but so many of them do that I don’t remember the last time we actually had to pay to have something shipped.
For the instant tv and video, you need to check that you have an Amazon Prime compatible device first, and register it. We hooked up our Playstation and away we went. There are so many shows and movies available, and a lot are free, but a lot are not. For example, Super Why, Caillou, Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood, are all free, but my daughter’s favorite show at the moment, Doc McStuffins, is $1.99 per episode or you can buy a whole series starting at $14.99. You can check out what’s available here.
Got a Kindle? Prime also allows you to borrow books from the Kindle Owners’ Lending Library for free and you get early access (in the U.S. only) to download a new book for free every month from the Kindle First picks!
Will Amazon Prime work for your family? If you order from site and think you spend more than $79 a year in shipping (it’s easy to do without realizing) you should definitely try their free trial, that way you can see all the shows, movies and books that are available with it.
