Baby Gizmo Fabulous Halloween Tips

Halloween is this weekend so we thought we would share our tips to make the holiday even better!

  • Safety comes first!  Make sure you light up your kids with flashlights, glow sticks and reflective clothing/tape so that they are visible when the sun starts to go down.  Also, take a minute to sit your young ones down and remind them about safety precautions such as:   1)  Looking both ways before they cross a street 2) Not talking to strangers without a parent with them 3) Waiting to eat the candy until they get home.
  • If you live in a cold climate, a bike trailer that doubles as a stroller (like a Joovy Cocoon) is a great thing to take with you trick-or-treating!  If the weather is going to be chilly, your children will be toasty warm riding from house to house in the enclosed stroller!  Plus, the back storage space in the bike trailer is great to keep your husband’s cooler of beer concealed as you are walking house to house!

  • If it’s cold out – layer, layer, layer!  Both you and the kids!  We found long underwear under costumes goes a long way on Halloween night!
  • Check your kids’ candy as soon as you get home to make sure it’s on the up and up.
  • Make sure your kids can still see through all those masks!
  • Eat dinner before trick-or-treating to discourage your children from loading up on candy during and after the fun.  Pizza or McDonalds is still better than candy bars for a meal!
  • Abide by your community’s trick-or-treating times.  And if you have small ones, go early!  There is nothing worse than dragging a cranky, tired toddler door to door in the evening.
  • We like to make most of the candy disappear the day after Halloween!  We take it to work.  We give it away.  We hide it away up in the cabinets.  My child’s grade school does a great thing the week after Halloween by collecting candy to send to the Troops!  That is where most of our candy will be going this year!
  • And finally, don’t be afraid to share your favorite candy picks with your child in case they get to choose from the candy bowl at the neighbors’ houses.  You know you will be sharing in the goodies, so why not make sure that some of your favorite candies will be in there.  *This only works unless you are at the door and you “encourage” your daughter to pick the Butterfingers because she “likes them” only to have her call you out in front of the neighbors by saying “No…YOU are the one that like Butterfingers, MOM!”
  • Have fun!!
