Businesses That Give Back

Entrepreneurs with good hearts; hearts that want to give back and change the communities around then and across the world. That’s the basis of a true business. One that I’ll heartily support when given the opportunity. It means a lot as a consumer, to know that my dollars are supporting something much bigger than a fashion statement. Read on to learn about four shops that are truly making a difference.
she does justice
She Does Justice is an advocate for those who need one. It is a space where organizations who are working for the good of others are recognized. It is a community of people who want to show love to the ‘least of these’. A place where we strive to show those in need that they are known and loved.
We have made it our mission to support organizations who are working to reach those in need, near and far. It doesn’t matter how big or small the organization, if we believe in its mission then we want to help support it. Each month we will spotlight an organization. At the end of the month we will write a check to that organization taken from the overall sales in our shop that month. Each month we will donate at least 10% of our gross profit to an organization to help further their mission. Check out our cause for this month on our blog!
umi sling

Can a simple piece of fabric change a life? I believe it can help.

It’s simple. Women around the world are responsible for their families, including gathering food, firewood, and water. Sometimes, this means neglecting the care of their babies due to the greater needs of their husbands and older children, especially when there is no extra fabric available to craft a baby carrier. Our mission is to improve the lives of mothers and young children by offering a practical solution: a simple fabric ring sling.

Through our collaboration with Project Baby Bilum, the Umi Sling will be a catalyst for change in women’s lives, improving the health of their babies by providing access to their mothers and to the life-giving breast milk that they need to survive. Our first target is the women of rural Papua New Guinea, and hope to expand beyond to other areas in need.

Wear babies, change lives.

better life bags

Better Life Bags has two purposes.
  1. Involve my customers in the design process.  Each bag is designed by you!  I have basic styles that are customized further by your choice of fabric and add-on options.  Each bag is unique and essentially one of a kind!
  2. Give back to those in need.  We started by loaning 10% of every purchase to low income entrepreneurs in developing countries through Kiva  and were able to loan over $2,000 to the people you see here.  Incredible.  NOW, we hire first generation immigrant women in our community who otherwise could not work outside the home.  We rent them a sewing machine and tools while teaching them a skill set that allows them to become a primary or secondary provider in their families.  Each bag is lovingly made with their hands and each purchase gives respect and dignity to their lives.
