Exercise At Home

I’m ready to get back in shape.. and not just because it’s one of my New Year’s resolution. But, my biggest problem (or excuse) is the fact that I’m employed by three little people. I’m a personal secretary, taxi driver, professional butt wiper, cleaning lady and personal chef. I have a hard time finding the hours, or even minutes, to devote to exercise. Never mind adding another activity where I have to leave the house- like going to a (gasp) gym. I have found that I am more likely to workout when I have some spare time while at home, and between diaper changes.

1. Wii Fit

A customized personal trainer in a video game? Hm. But then I read: “You can spend as much (or as little) time as you want trying out all of the 40+ activities Wii Fit offers.” Sold.

2. Wii Just Dance

I actually use this, on the days I have enough energy. I get so caught up in the music and dance steps that I don’t realize I have broken a sweat. The competitive side of you will come out with this one. I have to be careful when I’m dancing with my 8-year-old, I don’t want to hurt his feelings.

You can also encourage the kids to exercise and dance at home with the Wii Just Dance Kids edition. I admit, dancing to Wiggles, Yo Gabba Gabba and Happy Birthday is kind of fun.

3. Shiva Rea: Postnatal Yoga

I love this DVD. It’s perfect for a beginner or for someone looking to get back into Yoga after having a baby. You can chose the level you wish to start at or start from square one and work your way up. But, most importantly, this DVD helps all the points that are majorly affected by pregnancy- pelvic floor muscles, shoulders, back and abs- useful for every mother from postpartum to mom of older children. I know I still clench my jaw, shrug my shoulders and carry my kids only one of my hips.

4. Yoga for Mom and Baby: A Postnatal Yoga Workout with Your Baby

I tried doing exercises with my babies and I failed. Aside of the random airplane rides and the (not on purpose) squats while holding my child on my hip, probably to pick up objects on the floor, I just can’t exercise with my kids. I need to get in my own little zone. But, if it works for you, there are options!

5. Jillian Michaels- 30 Day Shred

This one might be a gradual process, a goal if you will. Everyone I talk to seems to love it but then they follow up with the words “challenging” and “difficult” and “hard”. I think the affect is bigger when more synonyms are used in a sentence.

6. Zumba Fitness

Super popular, super fun and meant to be an actual workout… unlike Wii Just Dance which is a game that happens to get your heart race up (and makes you sweat if you are like me and out of shape). I think I’m going to bite the bullet and get this set. Then? move my ottoman so I have enough space in my living room.

7. Fit Tv

Check your channels to see if you have Fit TV. We have satellite TV with the capabilities to DVR (record) shows. My husband has been recording shows from this channel for months but I just found out about it. Everything from a National Fitness Challenge to Namaste Yoga to Belly Dancing- you can pre-record your favorites and have them ready to go with a push of a button aka the second nap time starts.

I want to know, what are your home workout favorites? What works for you?

Have been doing Zumba for a couple of weeks now. My 3 1/2 year old twins keep asking me “Sing the Zumba song Mommy,” so I am thinking they really like it. I haven’t gotten them to get up and do it with me, but they definitely have fun watching me attempt it!! I used to be a “hard core” workout buff (something like 25 or 30 pounds and 4 kids ago). Not so much now. Zumba is a great cardio workout that will definitely shed some pounds if done often enough. I am not sure that it can really… Read more »

I’m in the same boat, except I only have 2 kids. One hasn’t napped in over a year and he isn’t even 4 yet and the other will be 2 in 8 days. Finding the time is really hard and then when I do have some time I’m never in the mood to exercise. I have the 30 day shred and was completely shocked at just how difficult it is. The great part about it is that it’s 20 minutes. She says if you want a 20 minute workout there is no resting and it makes perfect sense. I recently… Read more »
