Glade Expressions and the House Sale

If you’ve ever had to sell your house while having small children, you would know that it is not fun. In fact, there is nothing about the process that is enjoyable at all.

I have been enduring this pain of trying to sell my house for far too long, and like most people during this horrible housing slump, it’s horrible. It takes way too long. Sometimes, as in my case, it takes years. It’s like an online dating service and no matter how much I’ve willed it to happen, the right person (or buyer in this instance!) hasn’t walked through our door yet.

What that means is that I constantly have to keep my house in check. That is very hard to do with a 3, 5 and 7 year old. In an attempt to attract a buyer away from all the foreclosures and short sales on the market, we “staged” our home when we listed it over 2 years ago. All the extras lying about were put away. The family photos on the walls were replaced by generic photos of Europe and fancy places we have never even been to. The abundance of toys were sorted and either put away or given away to de-clutter. All this was in an attempt to entice a buyer to walk into our home and feel like they could move right in.

Two years later, I’m still looking at photos of the Eiffel Tower instead of my children’s darling faces.

Not only do I have to live in a “staged” home but it also has to be kept somewhat clean in case we have a last minute showing. Yeah, tell that to my 5-year-old who is going through a shred every piece of paper into tiny confetti and throw it all over his room stage!  If we want to go away for the weekend (or even for the day!), the house has to be immaculate and in showing condition. Just in case.

It’s exhausting!

We’ve done everything to entice a buyer. I even buried Joe in the yard! Yes, I succumbed to the tradition of burying a statue of St. Joseph in the yard upside down and facing the house. St. Joe is the patron saint of real estate, you know!?! My grandmother and mother swear by this and yet, the house still sports a For Sale sign.

My latest endeavor to try and get my home sold is scent. Yep, I’m making it smell good. Not that it didn’t smell good before but I’m making it smell better. I want people to come in my house and take in an aroma that subliminally forces them to buy.

That is where Glade comes in! I recently had the opportunity to try two of the new Glade Expressions products and I jumped at the chance as I figured this would be a perfect time to try out my aroma house-selling therapy.

Glade Expressions

The first product I bought was the Glade Expressions Oil Diffuser in the fuji apple and cardamom spice. I figured this would be a perfect scent for my kitchen. The things I like about the Oil Diffuser so far are:

1) It lasts 30 days. Crossing my fingers that is all I’ll need it for.

2) It has a no-spill design which means if my kids knock it over, I’m not going to have oil infused into my furniture.

3) It has a cool design that blends in with my decor instead of exposing the fact that I’m trying to entice buyers with my “aroma therapy”.

4) Lastly, it smells awesome. Not too strong but just enough to give the kitchen a lift.

Since I didn’t want my entire house smelling like apples, the second product I bought was the Glade Expressions Fragrance Mist in Cotton & Italian Mandarin. This is a mist fragrance that keeps the rest of my house smelling great in a fresh-laundry kind of way.

I use this mist spray all over the house (besides the kitchen – I don’t want to mix the apples and the Italian cotton!) right before we evacuate for a showing. That way, the perspective buyers walk into a fresh-smelling home that just smells clean.

The things I like about the Fragrance Mist are:

1) The refillable holder is designed to look less like a cleaning product (like other fragrance sprays!) and more like part of your decor in let’s say a bathroom that you can leave out.

2) The mist is very, very fine so it won’t leave everything soaking wet.

3) The fragrance I choose was perfect – not to heavy but still smells great. It blends in and doesn’t smell like I just covered the house in fragrance.

Overall, I’m very excited into my new endeavor to entice a buyer with my Glade aroma therapy. The products are perfect and I’m thinking they are just the thing I needed to get the job done.

Here’s to crossing my fingers for a quick house sale so that I can stop looking at photos of places that I’ve never been to, stop stressing about keeping every single thing put away and be able to walk out of my house without it being perfectly staged. Who can live that way anyway, right?!?
