Whiz Kid Learning System by VTech
The Vtech Whiz Kid is an educational learning system for your 3-6 year old. This new learning board makes learning fun with two methods of play: on the go or at the computer. The Whiz Kid is an interactive cartridge content system that includes 20-double-sided activity pages providing 120 games and activities. Besides extra game cartridges that can be stored in the side drawer and activity sheets that store in a pocket on the back of the tablet, we were happy to see that there were no loose pieces to get lost. There is a volume control and a spot to plug in headphones for those times that a quiet toy is needed.
By sliding in an activity page on the tablet, the Whiz Kid recognizes each page and plays the appropriate content. The pages are plastic sheets that are very durable, but don’t worry if you lose or damage any sheets, you can easily print more on regular paper from your computer that still work with the tablet. The activity pages help children learn about colors, shapes, art and music as well as improve their vocabulary, letter recognition, phonics, and math skills.
The first method of play is on the go with just the educational tablet which is about the size of a small laptop computer. It fits easily on a child’s lap making it great for the car and has a handy carry handle for traveling. We found it to be especially useful for keeping kids busy and learning during long car trips.
The second method of play is at your home computer. It took us less than 5 minutes to plug it in to a PC and download the appropriate software to start it working. Just a note: it’s not compatible with a Mac. The activities pages come to life on the computer screen and your child will also be able to access the Whiz Kid website to play additional online games.
We found there seems to be an endless amount of learning available with this great system and it keeps our kids interested. Whiz Kid has many educational benefits, from language and cognitive development to logical thinking. It teaches everything from cause and effect and problem solving to early science concepts. We were pleased to find activity sheets that help teach telling time, simple math with money, nursery rhymes, spelling and reading. Some activities are harder than others and are better for children closer to 5 or 6 but there are just as many aimed at the younger kids closer to three. We definitely agree with the suggested age of 3-6. Our kid testers in that range loved the system and did quite well with it but we would recommend not jumping the gun with a younger child because we found the concepts too advanced for our 2 year old testers.
There are 5 additional game CD and cartridge kits that are sold separately and feature kid’s favorite characters such as Dora, Spiderman and Thomas the Train. We are sure as the game system gains popularity, VTech will come out with additional kits with additional characters.
Our only suggestion for Vtech would be to make it compatible with Macs for all our Macintosh Mamas out there. Overall, the Vtech Whiz Kid is a fabulous educational system for your child that you will feel good about letting them play.
