My son used to absolutely hate being in his car seat. He would scream from the moment we strapped him in until the moment we got him out. It was a disaster and made me want to turn into a hermit and never leave my house again. My son is 18 months now and as soon as he sits in his car seat, he goes to sleep. When he wakes up, he is happy as a clam the rest of the drive. Here’s why…
-Download some of your child’s favorite music on your phone or put it on a CD.
My son loves Disney baby lullabies so my phone is full of them. Music they enjoy and are familar with soothes them and makes them feel comfortable. It also helps put them to sleep.
-Invest in a back seat mirror so your child can see you.
It always helps when baby can see mommy or daddy driving and know they aren’t alone in the back seat.
-Keep extra toys and pacifiers on hand.
When my son was younger he would lose his pacifier and wouldn’t be able to retreive it. Now I keep a few extra next to me so I can easily reach my arm back and pop one in his mouth. We also rotate what toys we keep in the car for my son so he doesn’t get bored with the same toy every single car ride.
-Talk and sing to your baby.
Sometimes all my child needs is to hear my voice for him to settle down and be happy. They want to know you’re there.
-Plan pit stops when traveling long distances.
Take breaks when you need them. Let your kids get out and run around a little from time to time. Letting them stretch their legs will help fight the boredom.
-Familiarize your child with the car and car seat.
The more we got in the car for drives, the more we traveled, the better my son did. he got used to being in his car seat and started to not mind it.
Happy and safe travels to everyone!
