Look Who’s…. Walking?!

As much as I’ve tried to deny it, Baby Chick is well on her way to becoming a toddler. It started with crawling, which quickly moved to pulling up, and has now escalated to a few attempts at her first steps. To say I am not ready to chase after two fully mobile children is a massive understatement.

I have given up on thwarting her efforts to become mobile and I am now embracing her persistence. In fact, I am so OK with it that I am even encouraging it. I’d like to think I’m just cool and relaxed about the whole thing, but I’m really trying to get her skills better developed so she’ll stop eating it every five minutes. The poor girl is looking so battered that I’m going to have to Photoshop all her baby pictures.

If you have a soon-to-be toddler I’m sure you feel my pain. Well, my advice is to get a few great push toys in your arsenal of goods. Push toys are great for a variety of reasons: they help your baby learn to walk, they help your baby maintain some sense of balance in those first few precarious months of walking, and they provide a ton of entertainment.

Here are my top pics for push toys that will help keep your baby light on their feet:

1. Plan Toy Baby Walker

Why it rocks:

  • It has an adjustable handle, which means it’s great for toddlers of all heights.
  • It has adjustable speeds. Nothing is worse than a walker that goes faster than your baby can move its feet. Can you say, “face plant city?”
  • It looks cool.
  • It’s really stable.
  • It’s made from all natural and non-toxic substances.
  • It also holds 24 colorful blocks- two toys in one!

2. Fisher-Price Brilliant Basics Stroll-Along Walker

Why it rocks:

  • It has a wide stance, which makes it really sturdy.
  • It doesn’t tip back like some other lightweight baby doll strollers.
  • It plays pleasant music.
  • It fits dolls nicely so they don’t fall out.

3. Vtech Sit-to-Stand Learning Walker

Why it rocks:

  • It can be used as a sitting toy and then a walker as baby grows.
  • It has all kids of bells and whistles: music, lights, sounds, spinners, shape sorters, piano keys, and a telephone.
  • It runs at a faster pace, but it has great maneuverability.

4. Radio Flyer 12S Classic Walker Wagon

Why it rocks:

  • It’s a classic. This push toy has been a best seller for over 25 years.
  • It’s very durable.
  • You can adjust the resistance for faster or slower walkers.
  • It doubles as toy storage.
  • The sides can be removed and the toddlers can ride inside the toy. Fun!

5. Little Tikes Shopping Cart

Why it rocks:

  • It’s very stable.
  • Kids cannot resist the fun of filling a shopping cart.
  • It’s tall enough for older children to use.
  • It moves quickly, but the resistance can be adjusted by removing the plastic plug in the base and filling it with sand.
