Product Spotlight Review: Valco Baby Astro High Chair

Valco Baby has introduced the newest addition to their line of products, the Astro High Chair.  Stepping out of their stroller box, this is the first high chair from our friends at Valco Baby.  This high chair has a modern look with clean, sleek lines and yet is still practical for your kitchen.  The Astro is definitely designed for a certain lifestyle mama.  If you have a small kitchen, are a minimalist mom, or if you are just looking for a compact folding highchair for your urban lifestyle, the Astro is something to take notice of.

The Astro has a fold like no other high chair making it fabulous for a small kitchen but still packs a few great features to keep mom and baby happy.

First thing we noticed was how incredibly easy this high chair was to set up.  You take it out of the box, lay it flat on the floor and pull up on the center back of the seat until the chair locks open.  Then slide on the tray and you are done.  That’s it!  No tools.  No attaching the seat pad.  Couldn’t be easier!

After it was set up in 10 seconds, what we noticed next was the large seat covered in beautiful, padded leatherette available in classic colors such as black, chocolate brown, aqua and ivory.  No cartoon characters or crazy patterns here!  The seat is roomy and carries a weight limit of 44 lbs.  It features an adjustable, secure 5-point harness for safety and a footrest for the comfort of your child.  There is a permanent t-bar, which is actually not a bar but made of the same leatherette fabric, attached to the seat for extra safety for your little eater.  With the way the t-bar is set up, even with a high weight limit of 44 lbs, we don’t think extra chubby toddler legs are going to fit comfortably in the legs holes though.

The Astro has a large and deep tray that is adjustable and removable.  There are two positions for the tray depending on the size of your child, but we did find that the tray unfortunately didn’t get as close to our little eater as we’d like.  Even with our 2 year old tester, there was still a large space between the tray and the child for the food to fall onto his lap.  The tray can be removed with two hands easily and has a large lip all the way around the tray to keep food from rolling off onto the floor.  The tray can be cleaned with warm water and a mild soap but note that the tray is not dishwasher safe.

Now, the Astro isn’t stocked with a million features but has lots of style and is perfect for the lifestyle-type of high chair that it was designed to be.  The Astro is one of those chairs that you see what you get. It doesn’t have all the extra bells and whistles, such as toys, dishwasher safe tray cover and a reclining seat, but it’s definitely worth it if you need a compact, lightweight highchair that has the smallest and easiest fold in a high chair that we have ever seen.

One of the main attractions of the Astro and the feature that makes this high chair stand apart from the rest is the compact fold.  There is no other more compact fold on a high chair on the market.  The fold is nothing short of fabulous!  It’s simple yet very effective in folding this chair down flat.  Yes, you heard us right, the chair folds down FLAT!  6.7” inches flat when folded to be exact!  Plus, weighing it at a very light 15 lbs, the Astro is easy to fold up and store away or travel with no problem!  Yes, we heard it was a flat fold – but we didn’t really believe it until we saw it in action ourselves.  You can take this lightweight chair to grandma’s (there is even a travel bag sold separately) or store it away in the tightest spaces.

The Astro High Chair is perfect for today’s urban lifestyle and retails for $149!  If you are an urban mama, or are looking for a chic, yet compact high chair with an unbelievable fold, then the Valco Baby Astro is a must see!
