Blocks are one of those timeless toys that provide endless fun for children. In my case, it’s also the ideal sibling toy. My 1 and 3 year old spend close to an hour building castles, towers and brother “cages”. They are also huge fans of building a tower in front of their mini indoor slide and then flying down the slide and crashing into their tower! Yep, imagination is in full swing and the laughter usually ensues. It warms my heart to see them having so much fun with something so simple.
Our favorite blocks are the Melissa & Doug Deluxe Jumbo Cardboard Blocks. They’re often seen in preschool classrooms and it’s no wonder – they are a big hit with a large age range. The box says 2+, but my 1 year old adores them and we’ve had a few 6 and 7 year olds over to play and they’ve enjoyed them too. Toys with a long play life are great investments, don’t you agree?
My biggest “complaint” about these blocks is the assembly time. The 40 blocks in this set come packed in flat pieces. So, yes, mama and dad have to have an assembly party before the fun can begin. It probably took 2 adults about 30 minutes to fold them all together. Another thing that crossed my mind with these blocks was the sturdiness. I mean, they are made of simple cardboard. But, I’m happy to report, they have stood up exceptionally well! Like I mentioned we crash into block towers and both of my children have stood on them with seeing any significant wear.
I love that Melissa & Doug thoroughly thought through the design, size and color of this block set too … “Three different size blocks offer a strong building foundation as well as a starting point for kids to conceptualize math (one large red block is the same size as two medium blue blocks or four small yellow blocks, adding blocks, counting blocks, etc). It’s amazing how child’s play truly becomes a great teacher of skills that will grow into many more elements of learning.
