Despite having numerous musical toys Thing 2 received a Boikido Percussion table last Christmas. Turns out I am glad for our lastest musical addition. This table stands out among the rest. First off, its wooden which is always a selling factor with me. Second, its quieter then the rest which is a gift from Heaven above.
The paints are all water-based minimizing the presence of VOCs. The Boikido Percussion table is made from FSC certified wood. This means that the wood has been monitored to come from responsibly managed plantations that meet the FSC standards of biodiversity, ecological and productive processes as well as social standards under which local communities can benefit from plantation activities without disturbing the eco system. I am not over protective about where the wood comes from but I appreciate it when a company respects the environment.
Although Boikido is a French company this toy is still made in China. All Boikido products are manufactured in factories carrying a social awareness certificate such as I.C.T.I. The ICTI CARE Process is the international toy industry’s ethical manufacturing program, aimed at ensuring safe and humane workplace environments for toy factory workers worldwide.
This is all great but the reason this toy really shines is in its volume level. The toy is loud enough to satisfy toddlers but quiet enough to not annoy the adults in the room. The xylophone has a nicer more subtle ting then the classic fisher price toy. The drum is very quiet. The sound is very low and unobtrusive. The symbol is the loudest of the group but still rather pleasing in comparison with similar toys. Two drumsticks are provided and don’t get lost when slid into the two holes provided on either side of the cymbal.
Boikido recommends this toy for 18 months and up but I think they are being conservative. The toy doesn’t contain any loose, small parts so any child who is able to sit up on their own could have fun playing with it. The Biokido Percussion Table sits up off the ground so a child can fit their legs underneath the table. In comparison this table makes the leapfrog musical table look massive. A child can not stand and play with the table unless they want to bend down or its placed up higher on a coffee table. The toy is a perfect size for an 18 month old but seems a bit small for thing 1 who is 4. Not that the size has stop him from playing with it.
The Boikido Percussion Table is a great option for wooden toy lovers like myself. Its also a great option for those with small playrooms or Grandmas where a large table like the Leapfrog would take up too much space.
