Spotlight Product Review: Cybex Topaz Stroller

Cybex may be new to the US but is a well known European manufacturer specializing in car seats, strollers, and baby carriers.  All Cybex products are created through the CYBEX S.D.F. Innovation principle. This principle guarantees an optimum combination of above average Safety and quality as well as contemporary Design and clever Functionality.  The Topaz is the third of four strollers in the Cybex line-up.

The Topaz has a sleek look featuring elliptical tubing frame made of lightweight aluminum, white handles and matching white wheels.  The frame weighs in at 17.6 lbs and has a carry handle for easy transport.  The umbrella fold makes this a perfect travel stroller.

The seat is heavily padded and very roomy fitting both our 1 year old and 3 year old with room to grow.  The seat back measures 12” wide, 18” tall and has a 25” canopy clearance.  The 2009 Topaz has a weight limit of 55 lbs so even your older children can hitch a ride.  The harness is one of Topaz’s most unique features.  The harness works like the harness of an infant car seat by tightening with a pull on the front strap or loosening it with a simple push of the release button and tug on the harness.  A handy loop is integrated in the front of the seat to contain any unsightly loose straps to maintain your sophistication among the chaos of children.  The harness clip is simple and easy to use for parents but difficult for small hands.  A one piece headhugger and harness pads make the Topaz a comfy ride for infants.

The Topaz has hands down the easiest recline I have ever had the pleasure of using.  The one handed recline is used by applying a small squeeze of the handle on the back of the seat and just a simple push of the seat sits it back upright.  The recline is nice and deep for young infants but still a few degrees short of a full recline.  A two position adjustable footrest is also included to keep your baby happy if they like to kick back and put their feet up on the stroll.

Another unique feature of this umbrella is the removable bumper bar that folds down with the stroller!  The bumper bar is great for pulling up for a better view or for adding third party snack trays since none are included with the Topaz.  An optional cupholder is available that can be attached low for the child or higher for the parent.  I was able to test out the cupholder location because another manufacturer’s cupholder worked with the Topaz and I have to say I wish it were higher.  While the location is still close enough for me to use conveniently I feel its a bit too close to my child which could be a problem if I were carrying something that I didn’t want spilled.

Rainy days are no trouble since the Topaz includes a fitted raincover.  We are travelling to chilly Chicago this fall so I splurged for the matching footmuff.  No threading is required for installation which we love since this makes the taking the footmuff on and off very fast.  The footmuff comes with a liner that stays on securely with the use of velcro on the back of the stroller.  If a warm front suddenly comes through the footmuff can be zipped off for removal.

The canopy on the Topaz is decent for an umbrella stroller but goes the extra mile with its pop out sun visor for extra protection.  All of Cybex’s canopies meet the strict Australian standards for sun protection including the integrated peek-a-boo window which is huge!  The canopy can be zipped off in the back for extra air flow.

There is a pocket on the back of the canopy for all your small essentials such as cell phone, wallet and cars for the park.  The basket is small and a bit difficult to access but I was able to hang my diaper bag instead.  The stroller is bottom heavy giving a very stable feel even with a hanging diaper bag and empty seat.  Woohoo for an umbrella stroller that doesn’t tip!

Even the tallest of parents will have a hard time kicking the back of this stroller.  The handles are some of the tallest in the lightweight category and are height adjustable from 41” to 42”.  The Topaz sports large 6.9” wheels with both front and rear suspension for a smooth ride.  Don’t expect an all terrain push but I was able to travel over grass with relative ease.  The maneuverability is excellent, we were able to push this stroller one handed and it took corners and tight spaces like a champ.

The Topaz features an easy and compact fold.  Using your foot (flip-flops beware) you push and lift the folding mechanism on the back of the stroller, then push the handles down and you are done.  There is an automatic lock which we love and a carry handle.  The handle is very sturdy but I would prefer the carry strap that the less expensive Cybex Oynx features for a more convenient shoulder carry.

The Topaz can be used as a travel system with the optional and inexpensive infant car seat adapter.  The adapter fits a wide range of seats including the popular Chicco Keyfit.  Since the adapter is a strap system it does not need to be removed for folding.  The Cybex Aton seat is compatible with the Topaz stroller without the use of the adapter and should be available in the US in early 2011.

The Topaz comes in a range of jewel toned colors to complete its sleek and sophisticated look.  We love the one handed recline, huge peekaboo window, foldable bumper bar and excellent steering.  This is an umbrella stroller with the style to turn heads and the performance expected from German engineering.
