Spotlight Product Review: Maclaren Techno XLR 2011

The Scottish founder of the company, an aeronautical engineer named Owen Maclaren, invented the very first umbrella stroller in 1965 after his daughter complained about the weight and size of her baby buggy. Maclaren used his knowledge of airplane manifolds to build a light-weight, aluminum frame that could fold compactly and still possess great load-bearing capabilities. In the last 50 years, almost every stroller company on the planet has borrowed from Maclaren’s design, but the company still produces the best umbrella strollers ever made.

The Techno XLR is Maclaren’s top of the line umbrella stroller.  This is the big daddy of the Maclaren lightweight line!  Stocked with features, the XLR even accepts an infant car seat to become a travel system.

The XLR has a big seat to accommodate a big kid up to a whopping 65 lbs.  With as big as the seat is, we could see a child that size fitting!  (Note:  This is a 10 lb weight capacity increase from the other Maclaren lightweight strollers!)  It’s very roomy at 15” wide with a 19” seatback and tall measurement of 27” from seatback to canopy.  Have an extra tall child?  Just slide the canopy up the frame for an additional 3 inches of clearance for 30 inches from seatback to canopy!

The seat sports a 5-point, adjustable, padded harness with the fabulous Maclaren buckle that is easy for mom but very hard for the child to do.  You have to squeeze the button on the front AND the back of the buckle to open. Our mischievous 3 year old couldn’t undo the buckle so had no choice but to stay seated.  We love that!  This is not a wimpy harness either – it is thick and strong to keep your baby in place.

Another luxury feature of the XLR is that it comes with a removable head hugger and a matching reversible seat liner. We love the padded seat liner that features the fabric and color of the stroller seat on one side and a grey microfiber material on the other. It makes the seat that much more comfy!

We love that the XLR has a one-handed lever recline that has 4 recline positions including just shy of flat which is perfect for a newborn.  It’s as deep of a recline as you can get without being completely flat. Plus, the seat in the most upright position is very upright.

There is an adjustable leg rest that has two positions – extended out or down. In order to extend out the leg rest, you just have to pull out two metal sliders to hold the leg rest fabric up.  Like the other Maclaren models, the XLR sports removable, washable seat fabric for easy clean up.   There is no baby or parent tray on the Techno XLR but you can purchase the Maclaren Universal Organizer that will hold all your baby and parent essentials and two bottles.

We love that the two ergonomic handles are taller than most umbrella strollers at 42” from the ground giving both taller and shorter moms and dads a comfortable push without fear of kicking the rear wheels and eliminating the dreaded stroller hunch.  Telescoping handles are usually unheard of with an umbrella stroller but not for Maclaren!  The XLR handles telescope out to give another inch of height to 43” for the even taller parents!

Let’s talk canopy!  The canopy on the Techno XLR is not only large but it also slides up the frame to adjust to accommodate the angle of the sun or give your little rider more headroom.  Plus, the canopy unzips in the back to reveal an additional canopy panel to allow you to fold it down in front of the child to really protect them from the sun and elements.  And that’s not it!  The canopy also has a huge UV protected sun visor that flips down and gives 10 extra inches of sun coverage.  You can also unsnap the back of the canopy and roll it up to open up the seat and allow air to circulate through to keep your child extra cool.  We are telling you, this canopy has it all!  The canopy also has a large, UV protective peek a boo window on top to keep an eye on your little rider. The sun canopy is water resistant and a handy rain cover is included.

As with most umbrella strollers, the basket isn’t the biggest.  It’s a large basket for an umbrella stroller but just a medium size in the stroller world.  The basket will hold a medium diaper bag or baby essentials.  The basket can be tricky if not impossible to access if the seat is fully reclined which is also common for a lightweight stroller.  For additional storage, there are two pockets on the back of the canopy to store a few parent or baby essentials.

The Techno XLR has the famous Maclaren fold.  Easy to do with basically just your foot. It folds easily and locks closed with an automatic lock. You know we love the automatic lock!  (Note:  Like on many strollers, the basket has to be empty to fold.)   For added convenience, there is a carry handle on the side that makes transporting and traveling with this stroller a breeze. Opening the stroller is just as simple as the fold. Unlock the lock, lift up the handles, and step down on the small rear footplate to open. Easy as that!

A stroller is only as good as the push, right?  So, how’s the maneuverability? Fabulous! We found this stroller to glide along the pavement and smooth surfaces rolling on its 6 ½ inch hard, rubber tires, easily turning on a dime with one hand. You can hop curbs with ease and navigate bumpy streets, but like any umbrella stroller, you can’t go jogging or off-roading with it.  The bumpy streets will give your little one a bumpy ride but the four wheel suspension helps cut down on the some of the bumps though.  The front tires do lock straight for some rougher terrain.

There are one-step, linked brakes on the rear wheels to lock the stroller into place.  And if you want to use the stroller at night or dusk, the stroller sports lots of reflective accents for safety.

The Maclaren Techno XLR weighs in at 17.5 pounds. It’s definitely not the lightest umbrella stroller on the market, but Maclarens are so fabulous in maneuverability and steering we accept the weight.  Plus, since the stroller can accept an infant car seat to become a travel system, we are happy that the stroller is heavier and sturdier to accept the added weight safely.

What was that we said?  This Maclaren takes an infant car seat?  Yep, you heard us right.  This is one Maclaren that will serve as your travel system.  The stroller comes with a car seat adapter bar that will work with a Britax Chaperone or Companion, Graco Snugride or Snugride 32, Peg Perego Primo Viaggio SIP 30 or the Baby Trend Flex Loc.

You can purchase additional accessories for your Techno XLR including a mosquito net, a universal organizer, sun parasol, Maclaren blanket and diaper bag.

There are two color options with the Techno XT:  black/champagne or Persian Red.  If you want to add a little more color to your XLR, you must check out their wide variety of fabulous reversible seat liners!  The seat liners are available in everything from a shearing liner that is perfect for winter to eco-friendly liners made from recycled poly bamboo to all kinds of different patterns and solid colors.

The Maclaren Techno XLR is a full featured umbrella stroller with a huge seat, high weight limit, gigantic canopy, travel system capability and fabulous maneuverability.
