Spotlight Product Review: Mountain Buggy Swift

Swift_PicMountain Buggy strollers are one of the most rugged and durable strollers perfect for all-terrain that you will find.  Started in 1992 by a dad who wanted to run the mountain trails of New Zealand with his little one – Mountain Buggy was “designed to be a buggy for all terrain, for a life without limit”!  Their strollers are designed in New Zealand to be extra tough to handle whatever may come your way!

The swift is mountain buggy’s light-weight, compact, three-wheel, all-terrain stroller. The swift is like the little sis of the mountain buggy urban jungle with its narrower and lighter frame and smaller wheels!

The seat on the mountain muggy swift is great and loaded with features! It is large, comfortable and complete with a padded 5-point harness.  The harness is not only adjustable to grow with your child but has a great buckle with safety buttons that makes it nearly impossible for your child to undo.  We love that!!  We have Houdini toddlers that love to escape their 5 point harness and stand up in strollers in less than 5 seconds flat!  Not in the mountain buggy!  Our testers tried and tried but couldn’t figure out how to get the buckle undone so they had no choice but to stay in their seat.  YEAH!!!

With the high weight capacity of 77 lbs, this stroller will definitely grow with your child. We do think your child will become too tall for the seat with the canopy before they ever reach the weight limit though.  The seat is 12 inches wide and has a 20 inch seat back and measures 23 inches from seat back to top of canopy.  Our older toddler tester at 3 years old and 36 inches could comfortably sit in the seat without his head hitting the canopy.

The seat reclines with a double strap system that allows you to place the seat in any position including nearly flat for newborns. The strap system reclines with two hands and isn’t very hard to do but we would like to see a one-handed bar recline to make it easier.

It has a decent size sun canopy with large peek-a-boo window (with cover) to shade your child. Since the actual canopy isn’t gigantic, we love that it has a “flick out” sun visor that provides 8 additional inches of sun protection.

The mountain buggy swift sports an adjustable handle bar that is great for taller and shorter parents. It doesn’t telescope out but it does adjust up and down in ten positions and prevents taller parents from kicking the frame of the stroller with a long stride. It’s easy to operate with two push buttons on the sides.  If we had to make one addition, it would be that the handle bar would telescope out as well to keep extra tall parents with a long stride farther from the frame.

There is a large basket underneath the seat that will hold a medium to large diaper bag or other baby essentials. There are two long pockets in the basket that will keep loose items in place.  The swift has a non-adjustable foot rest and a removable baby bumper bar but doesn’t come with a baby tray or parent tray.  It does sport a water bottle holder for mom (okay, or dad!) though!

Mountain Buggies are known to be rugged and durable strollers and the swift is no exception!  The swift sports two air-filled, 10-inch rear tires providing a very smooth ride for your little passenger. We can maneuver the swift easily on grass, playground mulch, gravel and even snow with no problem. There is also a rear footbrake that locks both wheels at the same time. In front, there is one 10-inch air-filled, lockable front wheel that swivels 360 degrees that provides fabulous maneuverability.  Even with a larger child aboard, you are going to be able to maneuver this baby around the tightest corners with one hand!  Plus, the frame is very narrow (23 inches across at the widest point) – so this stroller will fit down the narrowest aisles.  We found with the sturdy frame, lockable front wheel, and the air-filled tires, we even had no problem taking it for a light jog.

One very minor complaint about the stroller is that it does not come with a tire pump. Not too big of a deal because you can purchase one for about $7 but an included tire pump would be greatly appreciated!

The swift features an easy and compact two-handed fold. It has two steps and can be done quickly. Plus, we love that it can stand alone when folded!  The entire stroller collapses compactly and there is a manual locking strap to lock the stroller closed. We would love to see an automatic lock added for more convenience for parents.  The folded stroller is a rather compact package that can fit in small trunks with ease. The rear wheels also pop off easily for an even more compact unit.

Weighing in at 21 lbs, the swift is rather lightweight for such a sturdy and rugged stroller. We didn’t have any trouble picking it up and throwing it in our vehicle trunk.

There are some great accessories that are sold separately for the swift.  The new matching carrycot that easily attaches to the frame of the stroller will turn it into a pram.  There is also a storm cover, sun cover and travel bag specifically for the swift.  Car seat adapters for Graco, Peg Perego, Chicco, Britax and Maxi Cosi to turn the swift frame into a convenient, lightweight travel system are expected to be coming soon.

The swift is available in 3 colors:  Lime (Black/Green), Chilli (Black/Red) and Flint (Black/Grey).  It has some great features and with its 10 inch air-filled tires for a smooth ride, a full reclining seat (great for a newborn), a large basket, great maneuverability and a compact fold, we think it is a great lighter-weight, all-terrain stroller!

We have been terribly disappointed with our Mountain Buggy – both the quality of the product and the responsiveness (or lack thereof) of their customer support. After only seven months of LIGHT use, two of the wheels on our Swift model went bust. And we are talking total collapse with plastic rims breaking before wheels punctured and eventually came off the frame. Obviously there must be some error of fabrication however we are still waiting to hear back from MB regarding our warranty claim. In fact, we’re waiting for their customer support to even acknowledge receipt of the claim, or… Read more »

I know it’s been a long time. I was wondering if they ever got back to you. We had the same thing happen to our duo.

I swear by the Mountain Buggy range. As a kiwi mum, I own the breeze model as it is so light weight & perfect for all occasions, be it a walk on the beach, a stroll in the supermarket, a run along the esplanade, a wander in the park etc. I have also tried & tested the terrain, urban elite & swift models also. My preference is the older model breeze & hope they will be in production again so I can upgrade to a newer version. Many kiwi mums & dads own a mountain buggy or buggies because of… Read more »
