Spotlight Product Review: Mountain Buggy Terrain

Mountain buggy strollers are one of the most rugged and durable strollers perfect for all-terrain that you will find.  Started in 1992 by a dad who wanted to run the mountain trails of New Zealand with his little one – mountain buggy was “designed to be a buggy for all terrain, for a life without limit”!  Their strollers are designed in New Zealand to be extra tough to handle whatever may come your way!

The terrain is mountain buggy’s new full-size, rugged all-terrain jogger.  If you are looking for a stroller/jogger to accommodate your sporty and active lifestyle, the terrain is it!  This all-terrain jogger has the ruggedness for sport activity but still has some outstanding features for everyday use!

The seat on the terrain is roomy with a high weight capacity of 77 lbs.  It is 14” wide and sports a 20 ½” seatback with a 24” seatback to canopy measurement.  This large seat even accommodated our 5 ½ year old with room to spare!  There is a great 5-point, padded harness for your child’s safety.  The harness is not only adjustable to grow with your child but we love the great buckle with safety buttons that makes it nearly impossible for your child to undo.  We have Houdini toddlers that love to escape their 5-point harness and stand up in strollers in less than 5 seconds flat!  (Not good when you are running!)  Not in the mountain buggy though!  Our 3 year old tester tried and tried but couldn’t figure out how to get the buckle undone so he had no choice but to stay in his seat.

The terrain seat reclines with a double strap system that allows you to place the seat in any position including flat for newborns. That’s right FLAT!!  With a flat recline you can use this stroller from the time you take your bundle of joy home from the hospital through kindergarten and beyond. Just remember not to run with a baby aboard that is less than 6 months!  The strap system reclines the seat with two hands and isn’t very hard to do but we would like to see a one-handed bar recline to make it easier.  Our only complaint about the seat recline is that when you go from all the way reclined to upright with a child in the seat it can be tricky. The thick, canvas fabric of the seat gets caught up in front of the seat and can get in the child’s way.  You have to stuff the fabric behind the seat to keep the seat roomy for your older toddlers.

The stroller/jogger sports an adjustable handle bar that is great for taller and shorter parents. It doesn’t telescope out but it is a super tall handle that adjusts up and down in fifteen positions (from 34”- 46”) and prevents taller parents from kicking the frame of the terrain with a long stride. It’s easy to operate with two push buttons on the sides.

It has a large sun canopy with “flick out” sun visor and sports a peek-a-boo window (with cover) that will definitely shade your child. There is a large basket underneath the seat that even has a zip mesh cover in case your journey with the stroller gets a little rough so the contents don’t fall out.  There is also a long zipper pocket on the back of the basket for additional storage. The terrain has a non-adjustable foot rest and a removable baby bumper bar but doesn’t come with a baby tray or parent tray (but remember parents can put their keys, wallet and cell in the lower zipper pocket!).  It does sport two water bottle holders for parents though!

Now we have to say that this all-terrain jogger is sturdy and very well made!  We have come to expect great quality and construction with mountain buggy and they haven’t disappointed with the terrain.  It’s a rugged stroller/jogger that can tackle the roughest of terrain.  We were able to easily navigate grass, rocks, playground mulch, dirt and water.  We would bet it would do great on sand and snow too!

The tires on the mountain buggy terrain are ultra rugged, rubber, air filled tires that allow parents to go off-roading with the kids onboard!  Trail runner?  This is the stroller for you!!  The stroller boasts two large 16” rear tires and one 12” front tire. The front wheel swivels for easy agility as well as has the ability to lock forward or backward for added safety and control while jogging or rougher terrain. The front wheel also is complete with a tracking device for precision steering.  The shock absorbing suspension is not only great for a smooth ride but for taking the all-terrain jogger out on the trails without your little riders bouncing all over the place!  Plus, there are two brakes on the stroller.  A rear footbrake that locks both wheels at the same time to park it and a hand brake on the handlebar to slow the stroller down and to give you complete control as you are running hills.

So far sounds like it has great features, but how does it push you ask?  The maneuverability is amazing!!  It literally glides along!  We could even push it easily with one hand! We are talking load it up with a large child and push it with your pinky easy! And running?  Yep, that was a breeze too!  Not the running – just the pushing the terrain part!

One very minor complaint about the terrain is that it does not come with a tire pump. Not too big of a deal though because you can purchase one for under $10 but an included tire pump would be greatly appreciated!

The terrain folds with two little levers on either side of the footrest into a flat fold. It folds easily and weighs in at 29 lbs, so we have no problem putting it in and taking it out of our vehicle trunk.  Plus, the wheels can be removed easily for a more compact, folded unit.  There is a manual locking strap to lock the terrain closed. You know us – we would love to see an automatic lock added for more convenience for parents but we are glad there is a lock at all.

Like the idea of a rugged, all-terrain jogger mixed with the bassinet of a pram?  Mountain buggy hears you and gives you that option too!  The terrain is carrycot compatible to turn your terrain frame into a pram.  The carrycot attaches to the frame of the stroller when the seat fabric is removed.

The terrain will also act as a travel system with an infant car seat adapter.  There are adapters that work specifically with Evenflo, Peg Perego and Graco seats as well as a universal car seat adapter that works with Baby Trend, Evenflo, Graco, Peg Perego, Maxi Cosi, Chicco.

There are some great accessories that are sold separately for the terrain including a storm cover, sun cover and travel bag, as well as sleeping bag, tire pump and colorful reversible liners.

The mountain buggy terrain has some great features and with its rugged frame, 16 inch air-filled rear tires, shock absorbing suspension, full reclining seat (great for a newborn), tall, adjustable handle, fabulous maneuverability and the fact that it is carrycot compatible, we think it is a fabulous all-terrain jogger for your sporty lifestyle!
