How to Take Kids on a Long Flight (VIDEO)

This weekend my kids took the longest plane flight that they have ever been on, and I’m not going to lie, I was nervous. Seriously, I was panicking that our 4 hour flight followed immediately with a 7 hour flight to Hawaii was going to get ugly with my 4 1/2, 7 and 9 year olds. But with the Disney Aulani resort welcoming us in Hawaii, I knew I had to make those flights work!

For the week prior to our trip, I did a lot of planning. I made lists of things I wanted to take, things they they liked to do and ideas of snacks that would travel well. I figured that everything had to be planned out for our flights to Honolulu for this to go smoothly.

I’m happy to say that despite my fear, the flight to Hawaii went surprisingly well. It wasn’t nearly as bad as I thought and the kids did great! Today’s Baby Gizmo video is all about what we brought on the flights and tips that helped us survive a really long flight with kids.

  1. Great tips! I’ve done several solo flights of 7-14 hours with my daughter during toddler and preschooler hood. For that age, one of my best tips is to wrap EVERYTHING in tin foil. The entire trip becomes a fun game of unwrapping “surprises.” Books, games, snacks, etc… Each item killed an extra 5 minutes in unwrapping and then we made some fun foil balls to play with. I also try to schedule flights to land as late in the day as possible to make the jet lagged arrival day as painless and short as possible (when flying west to east such as to Europe).

  2. I travel frequently to Hawaii with my 5 yr old and baby. Your tips are great and I do a lot of those. For my preschooler, I always bring lots of small wrapped prizes. She gets one for taking a nap, behaving well, etc. It works great as an incentive. They don’t have to be expensive or fancy. I usually go to the $1 aisle at Target for items.

  3. HI Hollie,
Love the tips! Could you post or share your schedules? Also, how did you manage all those great items for THREE kids through the airport???

    Love your blog!

  4. Really good tips! Organisation is MAMA 🙂
Just wondering, what and how you would do on the way back?!
    Please let us know. Thanks.
    p.s. adorable kids
