WHAT IS HUMMUS?
Hummus, a creamy and velvety spread originating from the Middle East, is a delightful culinary creation crafted from humble ingredients, primarily chickpeas, tahini (sesame paste), lemon juice, garlic, and olive oil. This versatile dish not only tantalizes the taste buds but also boasts an impressive array of health benefits. Packed with plant-based protein, fiber, and essential nutrients, hummus offers a nourishing alternative to traditional spreads and dips. Its high fiber content promotes digestive health and helps stabilize blood sugar levels, making it a satisfying and energizing snack choice.
Additionally, the presence of healthy fats from olive oil and tahini supports heart health and contributes to a feeling of satiety. Hummus also serves as a versatile canvas for incorporating various herbs, spices, and vegetables, further enhancing its nutritional profile and flavor complexity. Whether enjoyed as a dip for fresh vegetables, a spread on sandwiches, or a flavorful accompaniment to grilled meats and salads, hummus offers a deliciously wholesome addition to any meal.
So, let’s start with basic hummus. You can either buy pre-made ‘original’ hummus or make your own. Don’t be intimidated! It’s actually incredibly easy to make your own hummus such as this Edamame Hummus. You’ll need a few basics- a can of chick peas / garbanzo beans, freshly squeezed lemon juice, tahini (available at most supermarkets these days), and spices that you likely already have! This hummus recipe is my favorite.
Hummus is delicious on it’s own, but sometimes it needs a little something and that something is, uh, flavor. Below are my five favorite mix-ins to try. As Emeril said long ago, “BAM!”

If you’re into the approachable spice that sriracha brings to the table, then you can’t pass this variation up. This Sriracha Hummus got a definite kick to it, but not nearly as bad as you might think…

Um, yes please. While not what you’d typically expect from hummus, this is too good not to share. Serve this with graham crackers, apple slices, and vanilla wafers!
