Whether you’re pregnant for the first time or fifth, I find it good practice to read up on all of the changes that are occurring within your body. If you’ve done any searching, whether online or in a bricks and mortar, you’ve likely noticed that there are hundreds, if not thousands, of pregnancy books and resources available.
I’ve narrowed down the overwhelming number of options to share my personal favorites. Here’s a list of six truly helpful pregnancy books (in my humble opinion). Happy reading!
1. Mayo Clinic Guide to a Healthy Pregnancy – $14.71 on Amazon
This book is, by far, the greatest resource I have found. It is full of truly helpful information in regards to all aspects of pregnancy- from pre-conception to delivery and recovery. I have found that another popular book, which you’ll notice is missing from this list, shares many ‘worst case scenarios’ that add to my pregnancy anxiety. While the Mayo Clinic does share some ‘what-ifs’, it does not dwell on them as I feel this other book does.
2. Pregnancy, Childbirth, and the Newborn: The Complete Guide – $10.74 on Amazon
Another informative and well written pregnancy option, I found this book very helpful in learning about different “styles” of labors and delivery. I also very much appreciated reading different quotes and stories from other mothers and their experiences.
3. The Expectant Father: Facts, Tips, and Advice for Dads-to-Be – $14.40 on Amazon
Unfortunately, for one reason or another, there are very few books written specifically for an expecting father. Many of them seem to have little relevant information. Others are written with corny jokes and heavy sarcasm included. This book, while not perfect, shares month-by-month explanations that are very helpful- especially to a first time dad.
4. Belly Laughs: The Truth about Pregnancy and Childbirth – $10.66 on Amazon
Jenny McCarthy keeps it real in this hilarious book. While you will find great information in here, it was written to entertain the reader. This book offers a fresh prospective that is like sharing silly and embarrassing stories with your closest girlfriends. A must read to help lighten the mood, especially if your anxiety is high!
5. Fit and Healthy Pregnancy – $15.56 on Amazon
I find there to be many, many wives’ tales about pregnant women exercising. As an active person by nature, I felt a strong desire to stay active throughout my pregnancy. The amount of people who had a vocal opinion about my growing bump in the gym would blow you away! “Did you know you’re not supposed to lift anything heavier than 10 pounds while pregnant?” This book helps put those wives’ tales to rest. It’s important to note that this book is intended for women who already have an athletic base, and not for those who are hoping to work out for the first time while pregnant.
6. The Happiest Baby on the Block – $11.73 on Amazon
While not necessarily considered a pregnancy book, this is, without question, the most helpful newborn baby book I’ve come across. I was tipped off to it after my son was born and was acting quite fussy. The five tips I learned (the 5 “S’s”) saved my sanity. I would absolutely recommend reading this book before your baby is born.
